The Charles Dickens link to Whitby is rather remote, as the story goes, Charles wrote many of his books at a pub in London named "The Prospect of Whitby". The name came from a landlord who renamed his pub "The Prospect of Whitby" named after a collier boat that came to the Wapping from Newcastle. The pub was originally called the Devils Tavern, and was severely damaged by a fire in 1682. The devils Tavern dates back to 1520. It has also been claimed that Charles Dickens once stayed at the Whitby Horse and Griffin.
