Isn't the internet wonderful! all this information can easily be found online, if you would like to research this further.

The Whitby Coat of arms has been in existence for centuries and as myth has it, was associated with the story of St Hilda casting the 3 snakes over the east cliff. In reality the coats of arms which appear in different forms, from the town council shield to the whitby coat of arms and the surname name Whitby in heraldic history have a different history.

Below are examples in which the 3 snakes can be found. The history of the amonite in symbolic use is actually a symbol of the Egyptian God Ammon. Ammon's sacred animal was the ram, the rams horn resembles the amonite (see ammon below), and thus the ammonite is an egyptian symbol.

It was Pliny the elder, a commander of the early Roman Empire, who called ammonites the horns of Ammon. Ammon is now called Amman the capital city of Jordan. The people of Ammon are known as Ammonites, like the people of Israel are known as Israelites. Ammon is a variation of the word Amun. Amun was the egyptian god of creation, amun or ammos was the greek word meaning sand. Why the three ammon-ites of Whitby coat of arms? Please email us if you know the answer.

Also, if one looks at heraldic shields, almost all have the number 3 in the theme. The number 3 is evident in the 3 snakes, the 3 roses in the whitby coat of arms. The question is why is the number 3 so important? It's not just in heraldry that the number 3 is such an integral theme. There are many examples that spring immediately to mind, the 3 bears, the 3 little pigs, 3 blind mice, 3 muskateers, 3 wishes, bad luck comes in 3's, a hatrick, trilogy of films, flags of the world have 3 stripes, A guess why the number 3 is so prevalent in history is it may have something to do with the holy trinity. The Father the Son and the Holy Ghost. If you consider how much the church has influenced the world, it would be no surprise that the holy trinity has influenced symbols in this way.

Please feel free to email us about the whitby coat of arms, its' history and meanings. We would welcome any ideas about the number 3.
