Fishing has long been a favourite around the UK, and Whitby has more than it's share of places to fish from. Fishing is a big draw to locals and tourists, whether it's just catching crabs off the side of the swing bridge for fun, fishing off pier or going out to sea on a charter boat. So, to see what all the excitement was about The Whitby Seagull went fishing on the Stoney-Broke.
It was the last day in August, and after 2 days of bad weather we got a good forecast and the go ahead for the fishing trip. We met up at the harbour side, opposite the New Angel Hotel on New Quay Street, there were about 12 of us plus the skipper and a couple of crew. The boat left at 2pm for a 3 hour trip, all the equipment, tackle and bait was provided which for a complete novice was a great way to get a taste of sea fishing.

So I popped a couple of sea sick tablets just in case! and climbed down to the boats which were ready and waiting

The Skipper took the boat out of the harbour out from the river Esk and out to the North Sea about a mile off shore.

On the way out, the bait "mackerel" was prepared and cut into small chunks, whilst I made the most of the views and took a few pics from the water as we left the harbour.

Once we got out, the skipper switched off the engine and let the boat drift as we all got our fishing rods out and with a little bit of expert tuition we started fishing. It wasn't long until I got my first catch a whiting, then another and another. The line had 3 hooks on it so with the mackerel bait attached to each there was plenty to attract the fish. The rest of the day I was catching mackerel, 23 in total, not a bad catch for a complete novice. We drew our lines in then off to the next pitch to try for some more. There were some bigger catches by the crew, a few good sized cod, which they seemed proud of. The time went really fast for most of us, with the exception of those with sea sickness. It wasn't long before we headed back into shore. It was a really enjoyable afternoon out, away from the tv and I will be going back again soon.....
