Each year in Whitby, a hedge is built in the harbour on the waters edge. The hedge known as the Penny Hedge is an ancient tradition carried out each and every year. It's planting goes back to 1159 when a local monk was viciously attacked for protecting a wild boar being chased by three "nobleman" and their hounds. The Abbott of Whitby was called and would have put the nobleman to death. However, before the monk died from is wounds, he offered them an alternative punishment. In penance for the attack they were made to build from 3 stakes a penance hedge each year, in the harbour that was to withstand 3 tides, if they didn't then they were to give their lands to the Abbott. Today the ceremony is performed at 9am on Ascension Eve (38 days after Easter Sunday) at Abraham's bosom, by a local landowner of land that once belonged to the Abbott, and once planted 3 blows of a horn (1 for each knobleman) are sounded and the words "out on ye" meaning shame on you, are said 3 times (once for each nobleman).
