Whitby Regatta, as we know it today (street carnival) began in 1929. Prior to 1929 the regatta took the form of boat races between coastal port towns using yachts and coble rowing boats. The original regatta started in 1840, and has ran almost every year since. Records show yacht races such as in 1847 "whitby challenge cup" and" the great coble race" in 1866. Three of the rowing clubs still with us today are Whitby Amateur Rowing Club (now Whitby Fisherman's A.R.C), Friendship Amateur Rowing Club and Scarborough Amateur Rowing Club (now Scarborough A.R.C). Today the Whitby Regatta takes place over a weekend in August, with lots of activities and displays. In 2010 the Regatta Celebrates it's 170th anniversary, and a special fund raising event took place in April at the Whitby Pavilion. The 2010 Whitby Regatta is said to be the biggest yet.
