At the head of the whitby seagull website page are 2 pictures, one of Whitby Seamen's Hospital on Church Street and a figure which is fixed in a niche above the entrance.
The centre niche houses a copy of the original figurehead from the ship the Black Prince. The figure is an Indian Prince. The Black Prince came to whitby for repair after an incident with a steamboat in March 1890. One can only suspect that the crew took refuge at the hospital whilst waiting for repairs, perhaps they donated the indian prince figure to the hospital?
