Whitby in times gone by, ads from the past here

In his 1894 book - Memorials of Old Whitby, Rev J.C Atkinson, cannon of York and incumbent at Danby-in-Cleveland, prepared a detailed map interpreted from historical records of what Whitby looked like in the time of the dissolution of the monasteries. The map is therefore a later interpretation rather than an original survey map. It is however very enlightening, not only does it show the extent of development at the time around 1540, it also gives the street names at that time.

Below is a larger scale showing the street names.
